(Statement on the death anniversary of Fidel Castro)

Two years have flashed by since the death of Fidel Castro, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution: two-years that have confirmed the principles and ideas that guided his leadership of the Cuban people as they pursued defiantly the revolutionary struggle against imperial domination, oppression and exploitation. On February 24, 2008, as embarked on 50-years of revolution, former Cuban president, Raúl Castro Ruz declared to Cuba’s parliament, the National Assembly of People’s Power 7th legislature: “Fidel is Fidel; we all know it very well. Fidel is irreplaceable and the people shall continue his work when he is no longer physically with us; his ideas will always be with us, the same ideas that have made it possible to build the beacon of dignity and justice our country represents.”

By holding aloft the banners of Justice, Peace, Internationalism and Human Dignity and continuing undeterred in building an independent and socialist society, the people of Cuba have reaffirmed the dignified and principled politics and leadership of Fidel. This principled and dignified leadership is reflected in the deepest aspirations of the peoples of the world to create societies founded on justice and human dignity.

In a world fraught with intense and significant dangers and challenges, Fidel ideas resonate and pulsate even more today. On June 12, 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Fidel presciently pointed out:

“An important biological species — humankind — is at risk of disappearing due to the rapid and progressive elimination of its natural habitat. We are becoming aware of this problem when it is almost too late to prevent it… The forests are disappearing. The deserts are expanding. Billions of tons of fertile soil are washed every year into the sea. Numerous species are becoming extinct. Population pressures and poverty lead to desperate efforts to survive, even at the expense of nature…Unequal trade, protectionism and the foreign debt assault the ecological balance and promote the destruction of the environment. If we want to save humanity from this self-destruction, wealth and available technologies must be distributed better throughout the planet…Enough of selfishness. Enough of schemes of domination. Enough of insensitivity, irresponsibility and deceit. Tomorrow will be too late to do what we should have done a long time ago.”
