Down with the US Economic Blockade of Cuba! CNC Statement |

On October 31st, for the twenty-seventh successive year the General Assembly of the United Nations will vote on the resolution,
Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba. There is no doubt that given the immense global respect and stature that Cuba enjoys, the world will once again resoundingly reject Washington’s more than five decade long economic war against the revolutionary island and its heroic people. Last year, on November 1st, 2017, by the massive vote of 191 to 2, for the 26th consecutive time, the international community repudiated this ongoing economic aggression against Cuba
The triumph of the Cuban Revolution on January 1st, 1959 was – and is - a victory for all those who struggle to defend the inalienable and inviolable right of all peoples to self-determination and genuine independence. Since this historic victory, Washington has not abandoned the goal of re-establishing its neo-colonial tutelage over the island, refusing to accept or reconcile itself with the January 1st, 1959 verdict of the Cuban people. Indeed, the U.S. economic blockade is the principal obstacle to Cuba’s social and economic development, having cost the island nation in excess of $1 trillion U.S, constituting it is a flagrant violation of the human rights of the people of Cuba.
Every U.S. government has pursued the illegal and immoral economic embargo – tantamount to a blockade - of Cuba, zealously pursuing and implementing the extensive series of criminal economic sanctions arrayed against the island nation. In short, the U.S. economic war against Cuba continues unabated, with the objective of negating and extinguishing Cuba’s right to self-determination and independence. Moreover, Washington continues its ongoing campaign of subversion, and maintains the U.S naval base that sits on the illegally occupied Cuban territory of Guantanamo Bay.
Relations between nations of the world should and must be based on equality and respect for sovereignty and the right of self-determination and mutual respect and equality, not on outmoded colonialist ideas and practices. This necessitates ending the U.S. economic blockade, ceasing subversive acts against the Cuban government and returning Guantanamo base to Cuba.
The Canadian Network On Cuba, therefore, calls on the Canadian people to join in the efforts of the global Cuba solidarity movement to end the immoral U.S. economic blockade, the occupation of Guantanamo Naval Base and the ongoing campaign to destabilize Cuba. Such an achievement would make a crucial contribution to the worldwide struggle for justice and human dignity.
