Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association of Niagara Hosts BBQ Celebration of Canada-Cuba Relations, Visited by Deputy Head of Mission of the Cuban Embassy
Niagara residents celebrated an unbroken tradition of Canadian-Cuban relations at “A Taste of Cuba” BBQ hosted by the Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association of Niagara at the Niagara Parks Commission pavilion at Old Fort Erie on Sunday, August 19. The Cuban flag was flying at the park for the event which was visited also by Giuvel Orozco Ortega, the Counselor-Deputy Head of Mission at the Cuban Embassy in Ottawa; from the Cuban Consulate in Toronto Consul-General Tania Lopez, Consul Ingrid Izquierdo, consular staff, and families; and Fort Erie mayor Wayne Redekop and wife Cathy. There was also a dramatic reading by Brian Gordon Sinclair of Hemingway on Stage, a Canadian Free Theatre Company.
“Canada and Cuba have enjoyed unbroken diplomatic relations since the Cuban consulate was established in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, in 1903, even before there was a Cuban embassy in Ottawa. Canada and Cuba's relations have endured through adversity despite the two countries having different social systems and stages of development,” said the Counselor-Deputy Head of Mission at the Cuban Embassy in Ottawa Giuvel Orozco Ortega, who had come to Niagara especially for the event.
The Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association Niagara was established in 1998 as an organization of Niagara residents who promote friendship and solidarity between Canada and Cuba. Proceeds of the BBQ fund a scholarship for any Niagara resident who wants to participate for the first time on the Canadian Network on Cuba's Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade, which involved a two-week tour of Cuba where people from across Canada volunteer side-by-side with Cubans as they learn about Cuban society and enjoy Cuban culture. More information about the scholarship is available by contacting the Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association of Niagara at
