On July 26th, 1953 the 26-year-old Fidel Castro led a group of young Cuban revolutionaries including Raúl Castro, Juan Almeida, Melba Hernández and Haydée Santamaría in an attack against the Moncada Army Barracks in Santiago de Cuba. This was their initial strike against the U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Although this attack was a military defeat for the young rebels, which took the lives of dozens of their co-fighters and led to the imprisonment of Fidel and many others, it is seen as the beginning of the Cuban Revolution. It was the July 26th Movement, named after this initial defeat, that led the Cuban Revolution to victory! This day has now become an important annual celebration in Cuba and around the world.
