Toronto, November 27, 2015. As a result of an invitation of the University of Toronto, Dr. Mariela Castro Espín, Director of the National Center for Sex Education in Cuba (CENESEX) and Member of the National People's Assembly, paid a working visit to Toronto from 18 to 25 November, where she had academic and professional exchanges with institutions working in the area of the rights of LGBTQ communities in Canada.
The intense work program included talks held with students and teachers of at the University of Toronto campuses in Toronto and Mississauga. There were also public events at the campus in the city of Kitchener as part of "The Havana Dialagues" series dedicated to the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and Canada.
Dr. Castro Espin participated in several roundtables with counterpart institutions where she engaged in discussions on topics of interest on LGTBQ rights, which allowed her to highlight the progress and realities of Cuba, while learning about policies, achievements and difficulties in the province of Ontario. Among the institutions were the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, the Sherbourne Health Centre, the Centre for Social Innovation and the 519 Community Center.
Mariela Castro's visit was highlighted in the Toronto Star, the Proud FM station, RCI, magazine Xtra Online magazine, among others.
