Cuba & Southern African Liberation: Successful Symposium Print E-mail

On September 27 & 28, 2013,  the very successful international symposium, Africa's Unknown War: Apartheid Terror, Cuba & Southern Africa Liberation, was held at the University of Toronto.

A significant part of the symposium's  success was the presence of Jorge Risquet Valdes, a member of Cuba's revolutionary leadership.  Risquet fought in the Cuba Revolution, in African anti-colonial/national liberation struggle, and played a central role in the events and  negotiations that led to the independence of Namibia and accelerated the end of the racist regime in South Africa. He is truly an historic figure.

The symposium was particularly well attended, with many rich and textured discussions. The crucial role that Cuba played in advancing the fight for freedom in southern Africa was examined in detail.  In a world facing calamities that threaten the well-being of humanity,  Cuba's example reminds us that there are other ways in which human relations and societies can be arranged.
